Walkthrough

  1. 01

    Nuvema → Striaton (Cilan/Chili/Cress)

    Lv. 12–14

The triplet you face counters your starter. Catch a Pidove and a Lillipup as backup.

    • Snivy → Chili (Fire). Tepig → Cress (Water). Oshawott → Cilan (Grass). All have a Lillipup (Lv. 12) too.
    • Catch a Panpour/Pansage/Pansear from the Dreamyard man (he gifts the one that beats your starter's counter).
    • Reward: Trio Badge + TM83 Work Up.
  2. 02

    Nacrene (Lenora, Normal)

    Lv. 18–22

Bring Fighting moves. Timburr from Pinwheel Forest is perfect.

    • Nacrene Museum quest: Team Plasma steals a relic — chase them through Pinwheel Forest.
    • Lenora: Herdier (Lv. 18, Take Down + Bite + Helping Hand) → Watchog (Lv. 20, Hypnosis + Retaliate + Crunch).
    • Counters: Pansear/Pansage/Panpour evolved with stones, Timburr (Low Kick), Riolu trade.
    • Watch Retaliate after she switches in second — it doubles in power if Herdier just fainted.
    • Reward: Basic Badge + TM67 Retaliate.
  3. 03

    Castelia (Burgh, Bug)

    Lv. 20–24

Fire, Flying, or Rock. Pansear/Pansage/Panpour gifts from Dreamyard help.

    • Castelia Sewers + Relic Castle side trip with Bianca/Iris later.
    • Buy Soothe Bell, EXP Share at Castelia Battle Company (5F).
    • Burgh: Whirlipede (Lv. 21) → Dwebble (Lv. 21) → Leavanny (Lv. 23, Razor Leaf + Struggle Bug + String Shot + Bug Bite).
    • Counters: Tranquill (Wing Attack), Darumaka (Fire Fang), Roggenrola (Smack Down).
    • Reward: Insect Badge + TM76 Struggle Bug.
  4. 04

    Nimbasa (Elesa, Electric)

    Lv. 25–28

Sandile (Ground) is everywhere on Desert Resort — immune to Electric.

    • Roller-coaster gym — ride to Elesa.
    • Elesa: Emolga (Lv. 25, Volt Switch + Aerial Ace + Quick Attack) x2 → Zebstrika (Lv. 27, Volt Switch + Flame Charge + Quick Attack).
    • Volt Switch swaps her in/out — punish with a Ground Pokémon you can leave on the field. Krokorok (Crunch) sweeps.
    • Reward: Bolt Badge + TM72 Volt Switch.
  5. 05

    Driftveil (Clay, Ground)

    Lv. 28–32

Grass or Water. Petilil/Cottonee from earlier shines here.

    • Cold Storage arc + Team Plasma side mission first.
    • Clay: Krokorok (Lv. 29) → Palpitoad (Lv. 29) → Excadrill (Lv. 31, Hone Claws + Rock Slide + Slash + Bulldoze).
    • Counters: Servine (Leaf Tornado), Sawsbuck (Horn Leech), Swanna (Surf), Cottonee (Giga Drain).
    • Reward: Quake Badge + TM78 Bulldoze.
  6. 06

    Mistralton (Skyla, Flying)

    Lv. 32–35

Electric or Rock moves. Tirtouga or Archen (fossils) are great.

    • Cannon-launcher gym — fire yourself across rooms.
    • Skyla: Swoobat (Lv. 33) → Unfezant (Lv. 33) → Swanna (Lv. 35, Bubble Beam + Air Slash + Aqua Ring + Roost).
    • Counters: Galvantula (Thunderbolt), Boldore/Gigalith (Rock Slide), Magneton.
    • Reward: Jet Badge + TM62 Acrobatics.
  7. 07

Twist Mountain → Icirrus (Brycen, Ice)

    Lv. 35–40

Fighting/Fire/Steel. Scraggy and Krokorok evolve around here.

    • Twist Mountain: Workers move boulders — paths shift seasonally. Catch Boldore, Cryogonal, Woobat.
    • Brycen: Vanillish (Lv. 37) → Cryogonal (Lv. 37, Frost Breath + Reflect + Aurora Beam) → Beartic (Lv. 39, Brine + Slash + Icicle Crash + Swagger).
    • Counters: Scrafty (Brick Break), Darmanitan (Fire Punch), Excadrill (Drill Run).
    • Reward: Freeze Badge + TM79 Frost Breath.
  8. 08

    Opelucid (Iris/Drayden, Dragon)

    Lv. 41–44

Ice moves. Vanillite from Cold Storage = free Ice attacker.

    • Drayden (Black) / Iris (White): Fraxure (Lv. 41) → Druddigon (Lv. 41) → Haxorus (Lv. 43, Dragon Dance + Dragon Tail + Dual Chop + Assurance).
    • Haxorus + Dragon Dance = sweeper. Lead Beartic/Vanilluxe with Icicle Crash (4× weak).
    • Counters: Cryogonal (Frost Breath), Beartic, Mamoswine if traded over.
    • Reward: Legend Badge + TM82 Dragon Tail.
  9. 09

    N's Castle climax

    Lv. 45–52

Major story beats — fight N, then Ghetsis. Then Elite Four.

    • Elite Four (any order, then Champion): Shauntal (Ghost), Grimsley (Dark), Caitlin (Psychic), Marshal (Fighting). All Lv. 48–50.
    • After E4, climb to N's Castle — N has 6 random Pokémon (one of each type theme) plus Reshiram (Black) / Zekrom (White) at Lv. 50.
    • Ghetsis next: Cofagrigus / Bouffalant / Seismitoad / Bisharp / Eelektross / Hydreigon (Lv. 54). Hydreigon is the wall — Fighting/Fairy/Ice.

Pro tips

  • Only Gen 5 Pokémon appear pre-Elite Four — totally fresh roster.
  • Audino in shaking grass = best XP grinder in the series.
  • Hidden grottos (post-game) have Hidden Ability Pokémon.
  • C-Gear / Entralink are tied to Wi-Fi (now offline-only).

Post-game

  • National Dex unlock — explore the eastern half of Unova.
  • Catch Zekrom/Reshiram, Kyurem, the Forces of Nature trio.
  • Battle Subway — Unova's Battle Tower equivalent.
