Battle Strategy

Castform-Rainy serves as a weather-dependent special attacker that relies on the 50% damage boost to Water-type moves. It should be used as a mid-tier rain abuser that takes advantage of perfectly accurate Thunders and Hurricane to pressure the opponent.

Best Used In

Low-tier formats like ZU (Zero Used) or PU in older generations, specifically on dedicated Rain teams where it can abuse accurate secondary coverage.

Strengths

  • Perfectly accurate Thunders and Hurricanes in rain
  • STAB-boosted Weather Ball becomes a 100 BP Water move
  • Versatile movepool covering various elemental types
  • 50% Special Defense boost under Rain in some side games

Weaknesses

  • Extremely mediocre base 70 stats across the board
  • Completely reliant on weather to maintain its form and power
  • Vulnerable to common Electric and Grass-type coverage
  • Outclassed by faster or harder-hitting Swift Swim users

Competitive Tips

  • Equip Mystic Water or Life Orb to compensate for its low base 70 Special Attack.
  • Always run Weather Ball, as it serves as a more reliable 150 power STAB move than Hydro Pump in rain.
  • Use Thunder to check bulky Water-types and Hurricane for Grass-type switch-ins.
  • Utilize U-turn to pivot out if a Tyranitar or Abomasnow switches in to change the weather.

Game History

Introduced in Generation III as a gift Pokémon from the Weather Institute in Hoenn to showcase the new weather mechanics. While it has never been a top-tier competitive threat, it remains a unique technical marvel for its Forecast ability and signature move, Weather Ball.

Trivia

  • Its body is composed of cells identical to water molecules.
  • In the anime, it was featured at the Weather Institute under the care of Professor Bart.
  • While its form changes, its base stats remain 70 across the board regardless of the weather.
  • Its appearance is based on a teru teru bōzu, a Japanese doll used to pray for good or bad weather.
  • In Pokémon Go, Castform-Rainy is the only form that can be Shiny as a wild encounter separate from its base form.
  • Its head shape changes slightly to resemble a water droplet when it transforms into this state.
