Battle Strategy

Dragonite functions as a premier setup sweeper or wallbreaker by utilizing Multiscale to safely use Dragon Dance. It leverages its high Attack and Extreme Speed to clean up weakened teams or bypass faster threats through priority.

Best Used In

Dragonite excels in Gen 9 OU as a Tera-Normal sweeper and serves as a consistent top-tier threat in various VGC regulations as a bulky attacker using Inner Focus.

Strengths

  • Multiscale ability provides incredible bulk at full HP
  • Highest priority STAB-boosted moves like Extreme Speed
  • Massive Attack stat and diverse offensive movepool
  • Access to reliable recovery in Roost

Weaknesses

  • 4x weakness to Ice-type attacks
  • Stealth Rock vulnerability breaks Multiscale immediately
  • Susceptibility to burns/status reducing offensive pressure
  • Relies heavily on Heavy-Duty Boots to maintain utility

Competitive Tips

  • Equip Heavy-Duty Boots to ensure Multiscale remains intact when switching into entry hazards.
  • Use Terastallization (especially Normal) to boost Extreme Speed damage and shed defensive weaknesses.
  • Pair with Dragon Dance to outpace the unboosted metagame after a single turn.
  • Run Choice Band with Inner Focus to ignore Intimidate and flinches while dealing massive immediate damage.

Game History

Introduced in Generation I as the original pseudo-legendary, Dragonite was the final challenge of Lance's champion team. It evolved from a niche niche utility mon to a top-tier threat in Generation V with the introduction of its Hidden Ability, Multiscale, and has remained a staple of the OU tier ever since.

Trivia

  • It is said to be able to fly around the globe in just 16 hours, reaching speeds of roughly 1,550 mph.
  • Despite its bulky appearance, it is known as the 'Sea Guardian' and is famous for saving drowning sailors.
  • Dragonite's design is notably different from its pre-evolutions, losing the serpentine body and blue scales for a bipedal, orange appearance.
  • In the anime, Orange Islands Champion Drake used a Dragonite that knew ten different moves in a single battle.
  • In Pokémon Yellow, Lance's Dragonite knows Barrier, a move it could not legally learn at the time.
  • It has the highest base stat total of all non-Mega, non-Legendary Flying-type Pokémon.
