Battle Strategy
Dubwool functions best as a physical wall and set-up sweeper using the combination of Cotton Guard and Body Press. By maximizing its Defense, it simultaneously improves its survivability and increases its offensive output thanks to its signature ability Fluffy.
Best Used In
Dubwool is most effective in Gen 8 PU or lower tiers where its physical bulk is hardest to crack. It also finds a niche in Dynamax formats like VGC 2020 where Max Guard and Max Strike help it control speed.
Strengths
- ›High base Defense stat (100)
- ›Fluffy ability halves damage from contact moves
- ›Access to Cotton Guard for rapid stat boosting
- ›Excellent synergy between Defense and Body Press
Weaknesses
- ›Fluffy ability doubles damage taken from Fire-type moves
- ›Low base Special Defense makes it vulnerable to special attackers
- ›Vulnerable to Toxapex and other Haze or Phazing users
- ›Limited offensive coverage outside of Normal and Fighting moves
Competitive Tips
- ›Run Body Press as your primary attacking move to capitalize on Cotton Guard boosts.
- ›Equip Leftovers to provide passive recovery, as Dubwool lacks reliable instant healing outside of Rest.
- ›Utilize the Fluffy ability to check physical threats like Urshifu-Rapid-Strike or Rillaboom.
- ›Keep Dubwool away from Fire-type coverage like Mystical Fire or Flare Blitz to avoid the Fluffy penalty.
- ›Consider Silk Scarf or Double-Edge if running a Scrappy set to hit Ghost-types.
Recommended Teammates

Pelipper
Its Drizzle ability sets rain, which weakens the Fire-type moves that Dubwool is weak to due to Fluffy.

Toxapex
Provides a solid Special Defense backbone and can soak up Toxic spikes that would otherwise stall Dubwool out.

Dragapult
Can pivot Dubwool in safely with U-turn and threatens the Ghost-types that are immune to Body Press.

Grimmsnarl
Provides Reflect and Light Screen support, making Dubwool nearly impossible to break on the physical side.

Corviknight
Can use Defog to clear hazards and shares good defensive synergy, resisting the Poison and Steel moves Dubwool dislikes.
Game History
Introduced in Generation VIII as the evolved form of Wooloo, Dubwool is famously the ace Pokémon of Hop, the player's rival in Pokémon Sword and Shield. It served as a consistent early and mid-game hurdle for players during the Galar region gym challenge.
Trivia
- ◆Dubwool's design is inspired by the Jacob sheep, a breed known for having multiple pairs of horns.
- ◆Its name is a portmanteau of 'double' and 'wool', referring to its thick fleece.
- ◆In the Pokémon Sword and Shield anime (Twilight Wings), Hop's Wooloo is shown to be self-conscious of its strength compared to Leon's Charizard before evolving.
- ◆According to its Pokédex entry, its wool is so springy that it can bounce like a rubber ball.
- ◆Despite being a Normal-type, it is frequently used by trainers in the Galar region as a makeshift barrier for herding.
- ◆It is one of the few Pokémon that can reach the maximum Defense stat in just two turns using Cotton Guard.
