Battle Strategy
Garchomp functions as a premier offensive tank or lead hazard setter that utilizes its unique base 102 Speed to outpace common base 100 threats. It excels at forcing switches with its powerful STAB combination and can sweep weakened teams using Swords Dance or provide chip damage via Rocky Helmet and Rough Skin.
Best Used In
Garchomp excels in Gen 9 OU as a hazard-stacking lead or a Scale Shot sweeper, and remains a top-tier threat in VGC formats that allow for high-speed Ground-type pressure.
Strengths
- ›Elite base 102 Speed tier
- ›Rough Skin and Rocky Helmet contact damage synergy
- ›Immunity to Electric-type moves
- ›Highly oppressive Ground/Dragon STAB coverage
- ›Excellent natural 108/95/85 bulk
Weaknesses
- ›4x weakness to Ice-type priority and coverage
- ›Lack of reliable recovery outside of Leftovers
- ›Vulnerable to Fairy-type attacks and Intimidate
- ›Reliance on Scale Shot for Speed boosting
Competitive Tips
- ›Run Stealth Rock and Spikes to take advantage of forced switches and punish physical attackers with Rough Skin.
- ›Use Swords Dance with Loaded Dice to maximize the power and consistency of Scale Shot.
- ›Utilize Tera Steel or Tera Fire to flip weaknesses into resistances against Ice and Fairy types.
- ›Opt for Earthquake over Stomping Tantrum for consistent high-damage Ground STAB in singles.
- ›Equip a Choice Scarf to serve as a revenge killer, utilizing its Speed to surprise faster threats like Dragapult or Iron Valiant.
Recommended Teammates

Corviknight
Provides a slow U-turn for safe entry and resists the Ice and Fairy moves that threaten Garchomp.

Tyranitar
Historically activates Sand Veil and handles Specially Defensive walls that Garchomp struggles to break.

Gholdengo
Blocks Defog to keep Garchomp's entry hazards on the field and resists Ice/Fairy/Dragon.

Iron Valiant
Applies special offensive pressure to physical walls like Great Tusk or Dondozo.

Volcarona
Forms a powerful offensive core by threatening the Steel and Grass types that switch into Ground moves.
Game History
Introduced in Generation 4 as the signature Pokémon of Sinnoh Champion Cynthia, Garchomp immediately dominated the competitive scene. It famously became the first non-Legendary Pokémon to be banned to the Uber tier in Gen 4 due to its overwhelming stats and the Sand Veil evasion clause.
Trivia
- ◆Its design is a fusion of a hammerhead shark, a jet plane, and a Carcharodontosaurus.
- ◆Garchomp is one of the few Pokémon where the gender difference is a notched dorsal fin on the male.
- ◆In the anime, Cynthia's Garchomp is depicted as nearly invincible, famously defeating Paul's entire team.
- ◆Despite having wings and a Pokédex entry stating it can fly at sonic speeds, it cannot learn the move Fly.
- ◆Mega Garchomp is one of the rare instances where a Mega Evolution's Speed stat actually decreases from its base form.
- ◆Its name is likely a portmanteau of 'gar' (a type of fish), 'guard', or 'gargantuan' and 'chomp'.
