Battle Strategy
Alolan Vulpix functions primarily as a Snow setter and support lead in Little Cup. Using its Snow Warning ability, it boosts the Defense of Ice-types and enables Aurora Veil to provide critical damage reduction for its teammates.
Best Used In
It excels primarily in the Little Cup (LC) tier as a dedicated support lead for Snow-based archetype teams.
Strengths
- ›Snow Warning provides immediate weather control
- ›Aurora Veil reduces both physical and special damage
- ›High base Speed for a Little Cup unevolved Pokémon
- ›Access to Freeze-Dry to hit Water-types super-effectively
Weaknesses
- ›Quadruple weakness to Steel-type priority like Bullet Punch
- ›Extremely frail physical bulk outside of Snow
- ›Vulnerable to all forms of entry hazards, especially Stealth Rock
- ›Low Special Attack prevents it from being a primary sweeper
Competitive Tips
- ›Always run Icy Rock to extend Aurora Veil and Snow duration from 5 to 8 turns.
- ›Utilize Freeze-Dry to catch common switch-ins like Mareanie or Shellder off guard.
- ›Equip Moonblast to provide coverage against Fighting-types like Mienfoo and Timburr.
- ›Use Encore to lock passive opponents into status moves, creating setup opportunities for teammates.
- ›Consider Eviolite if the team needs Vulpix to pivot multiple times rather than just lead.
Recommended Teammates

Alolan Sandshrew
Benefits from Slush Rush speed boost and Snow defense buff.

Pawniard
Appreciates Aurora Veil to setup Swords Dance and resists Alolan Vulpix's Rock and Steel weaknesses.

Mienfoo
Provides U-turn pivoting to bring Vulpix in safely and handles Steel-types.

Staryu
Offers Rapid Spin support to clear Stealth Rocks that heavily damage Vulpix.

Gastly
Acts as a powerful glass cannon that survives longer behind Aurora Veil.
Game History
Introduced in Generation VII as a regional variant of the Kanto original, Alolan Vulpix became a mascot for the Alola region and the face of the Hokkaido promotion in Japan. It gained significant competitive relevance in Gen 7 Little Cup and has maintained a niche as a hail/snow setter whenever available in the Pokédex.
Trivia
- ◆It was originally called 'Keokeo' in early development, which is Hawaiian for 'white'.
- ◆According to the Pokédex, it was brought to Alola by humans but moved to snowy mountains to avoid other Pokémon.
- ◆It can freeze its breath to temperatures of -60 degrees Fahrenheit.
- ◆Lillie's Alolan Vulpix in the anime, nicknamed Snowy, hatched from an egg and was her first Pokémon.
- ◆Design-based inspiration includes the Arctic Fox and the concept of 'ice spirits'.
- ◆In Generation 9, its Snow Warning ability was buffed because Snow now grants a 50% Defense boost to Ice-types.
