Battle Strategy
Blastoise excels as a bulky utility spinner or a late-game Shell Smash sweeper. It leverages its natural bulk to survive hits, setup with Shell Smash, and utilize White Herb to restore stats before sweeping with Hydro Pump and Ice Beam.
Best Used In
Blastoise is best utilized in the Underused (UU) or Neverused (NU) tiers as a dedicated spinner or in VGC formats featuring its Gigantamax form for the G-Max Cannonade chip damage.
Strengths
- ›High base defensive stats (100 Defense, 105 Special Defense)
- ›Access to Shell Smash for rapid offensive escalation
- ›Reliable entry hazard removal with Rapid Spin
- ›Mono-Water typing provides few weaknesses and many resistances
Weaknesses
- ›Lacks reliable recovery outside of Leftovers or Rest
- ›Susceptible to common Electric and Grass-type priority
- ›Outclassed offensively by other Shell Smashers like Polteageist or Cloyster
- ›Vulnerable to Toxic and chip damage over long matches
Competitive Tips
- ›Run Shell Smash with a White Herb to negate defensive drops and sweep through weakened teams.
- ›Utilize the Mega Launcher ability (when in Mega form) to boost 'Pulse' moves like Dark Pulse and Aura Sphere.
- ›Equip Heavy-Duty Boots on defensive sets to safely entry and use Rapid Spin without taking hazard damage.
- ›Consider Flip Turn in lower tiers to maintain momentum and pivot into offensive threats.
- ›Use Tera Steel or Tera Ground in Gen 9 to flip matchups against Electric-type attackers.
Recommended Teammates

Rillaboom
Provides Grassy Terrain for passive recovery and checks the Electric and Grass-types that threaten Blastoise.

Corviknight
Forms a strong defensive core and can pivot Blastoise in safely via U-turn.

Heatran
Resists the Grass and Freeze-Dry attacks that Blastoise fears while Blastoise covers its Ground/Water weaknesses.

Dragapult
Applies immense pressure to ghosts that might spin-block Blastoise's Rapid Spin.

Gholdengo
Blocks opposing hazard removal, ensuring the pressure Blastoise's teammates set remains on the field.
Game History
Introduced in Generation I as the final evolution of the Kanto starter Squirtle, Blastoise served as the mascot for Pokémon Blue. It gained significant competitive relevance in Generation VI with a Mega Evolution and later received a Gigantamax form in Generation VIII's Isle of Armor DLC.
Trivia
- ◆Its design is a combination of a tortoise and a tank, specifically inspired by para-military vehicles.
- ◆Despite having cannons, it could not learn 'cannon' or 'ball/pulse' moves effectively until much later generations.
- ◆In the Pokémon Red and Blue sprites, Blastoise's ears are more pointed and resemble wings, a trait softened in later designs.
- ◆Blastoise is the only Kanto starter that does not gain a secondary typing upon its base evolution.
- ◆Its Shell Smash animation in modern 3D games is one of the few times it retracts its limbs fully into its shell.
- ◆The Pokédex claims its water jets can pierce steel and concrete, yet it initially lacked high-power special moves in Gen I.
