Battle Strategy
In the Little Cup tier, Squirtle functions as a versatile utility spinner or a Shell Smash sweeper. It leverages its decent natural bulk and the move Rapid Spin to clear hazards, or scales its offensive pressure using Shell Smash to outspeed the unboosted metagame.
Best Used In
Squirtle is best utilized in the LC (Little Cup) tier. It excels in hyper-offense teams as a Shell Smash sweeper or on balanced teams as a bulky hazard remover.
Strengths
- ›Access to Shell Smash for high offensive ceiling
- ›Reliable entry hazard removal with Rapid Spin
- ›Solid physical defense for a base-stage Pokemon
- ›Pure Water typing provides few weaknesses and key resistances
Weaknesses
- ›Low base Speed before set-up
- ›Vulnerable to common Electric and Grass-type priority
- ›Heavy reliance on Eviolite for defensive longevity
- ›Lack of reliable recovery outside of Berry Juice
Competitive Tips
- ›Run Shell Smash with a White Herb or Eviolite to mitigate the defensive drops.
- ›Utilize the ability Torrent to boost Water-type STAB moves like Scald or Surf when at low HP.
- ›Use Ice Beam as essential coverage to hit Grass and Dragon-types that resist Water.
- ›Incorporate Fake Out in the lead slot to break Sturdy or Focus Sashes early in the match.
- ›Consider Aqua Jet as a priority option to pick off weakened faster threats.

Pawniard

Ponyta
Checks the Grass-types like Foongus or Cottonee that wall Squirtle's STAB moves.
Game History
Introduced in Generation I as the Water-type starter of the Kanto region, Squirtle established the classic Fire-Grass-Water triangle. It has remained a staple of the franchise, gaining significant competitive buffs in Generation VIII when it finally received access to the move Shell Smash.
Trivia
- ◆Its name is a portmanteau of 'squirrel' and 'turtle', referencing its bushy, curled tail.
- ◆In the anime, the Squirtle Squad is a group of abandoned Squirtle who wore signature sunglasses.
- ◆Squirtle's design was inspired by 'Zenigame', the Japanese term for pond turtles which literally means 'money turtle'.
- ◆It is the only Kanto starter that is a pure type throughout its entire three-stage evolution line.
- ◆Early concept art for Squirtle depicted it with a more prominent, jagged shell pattern resembling a Kappa.
- ◆The Pokédex mentions its shell is soft at birth but soon becomes resilient enough to bounce off physical attacks.
